People homeschool for many reasons. For some, it’s about living out their faith in concrete ways. For others, it’s about spending more time with their children and never missing an opportunity to influence them with positive life lessons. Whatever the reason, they all add up to a story, and that’s something worth sharing. After all, people love hearing from others who homeschool about why they do it, tips that help them succeed, and how to make it amazing year after year, grade after grade. That’s why Abeka created this space where you can share with others what makes homeschooling such an important part of your life and theirs.

Hear from Abeka's President, Dr. Troy Shoemaker, about our passion for supporting homeschool parents.

My son was being bullied at school and it was being overlooked. The last straw was when another child broke his finger at PE, in the morning, they didn’t call me and I didn’t find out about it until 3 pm. Teaching him has turned out to be very rewarding for both of us and great for bonding!

We homeschool for many reasons. First, we homeschool because we can freely talk about God and weave the Bible into every subject we study. Second, we homeschool because we can choose the curriculum our children use. We have chosen to use Abeka, an advanced, Christian-based curriculum that we love!

Kayla

I was born and raised in a christan home in predominantly muslim country in pakistan, my parents raised us with great example of what its like to have God be the center of your life and home. I am a mommy of 6 wonder kids and I choose Abeka becuase there christian values alined with mine.

My child is a social butterfly and loves school. It’s truly the safety aspect. My aha moments was when I was looking to Purchase bullet proof gear like book bag and extra to protect our little one. My thoughts clearly if it’s this bad then why would I ever subject my child to this?

I am teaching my three boys, ages 6, 10, and 11, for the first time because, after years of having success (luck?) in the public school system, our last military move led us to a very disappointing experience. Homeschool was the only solution for our family. We are excited to begin this adventure.

The reasons we homeschool are to many to name. But I love every minute of it. I have learned more in the last 14 years of homeschooling then when I was actually in school myself. I thank the Lord that I have the opportunity to “train up my child” and be a part of their everyday life.

Alecia

W.

I taught my 3 kids at home because I wanted to educate them in a three fold way; in the way the Lord would be honored in their lives for His glory, in a diligent academic work ethic, and in a family focused environment. I knew I was my kids greatest advocate and Abeka helped make all of these goals

Debra

P.

I have been convicted to homeschool my kids on several levels. One of them being that I see what kids are taught in schools today and I think, why can’t I do that and maybe even better. I felt so proud when my daughter learned to read. Not just in her but in myself. I taught her that! Me! It is amaz ...

After graduating from college I was introduced to families that homeschooled. I decided to give it a try with my four year old son. We agreed to take it a year at a time. 21 years later and 6 more children we have homeschooled all our children. I love the close bonds our family has formed.

Alicia

C.

We are blessed to be able to homeschool our 7 year old grandson for the first time. We will be traveling in our RV while homeschooling and seeing all the things some children only get to read about. In public school Morgen had trouble now he will be in an safe environment and we can challenge him.

Sheri

F.

We started homeschooling because our son was unhappy in public school and we were not satisfied with the curriculum or the lack of exercise and creativity. Homeschool was the single best choice we have made as a family. Our son is thriving academically, spiritually, and physically!

Gwen

L.

There’s nothing more important for a mom than the happiness of our kids. Homeschooling trough out Abeka, give me the opportunity to share more time with my daughter while she learn without any unnecessary stress. For my daughter, school means happiness.

Yarinell

I teach because when I weigh the benefits of homeschool versus public and private school it doesn’t compare . Giving my children undivided attention in an uninterrupted environment while also including the gospel and doing adventures in our island with other homeschoolers, nothing beats that focus

Michelle

I want the best education for my children, and I enjoying having my children home with me!

Cameron

I knew before I even got married that I would homeschool the children God blessed me with and we would use Abeka. 19 years ago God blessed me with a husband who also had conviction last about homeschooling. And the rest is history!! We are so thankful for the Abeka curriculum and all it has to offer ...

I love to teach children . I love helping them learn.

Joyce

K.

I started out homeschooling because I knew that my children would have a Biblical worldview and learn Christian principles. I was also super excited to watch my child learn. Since then I have enjoyed going on many family field trips. I enjoy knowing my children are getting a valuable education.

Angela

We started homeschooling 15 years ago out of a deep, personal conviction that it was God's will for our family. While we are still convinced it is God's will for us, there are now heaps of reasons that we home school. I cannot imagine my days without the children at home! I would miss so much!

Karen

O.

I was homeschooled 5 years ago, because my dad was missionary in South America. The beginning was very hard because I didn’t speak English at all, but now I feel so blessed by the Lord for letting me use the Abeka Curriculum. I am so happy to watch my 11th grade video lessons.

Valentina

I am doing what I love and my children are getting the best possible education we can give them.

As we have sought God's will for our family, He has led us on this amazing journey. We have enjoyed having influence on our three daughters, choosing the curricula that we want instilled in their minds and hearts, developing wonderful relationships, and being able to have a flexible schedule.

Lydia

My son is learning everything along with the Word of God, flexible schedule is pretty amazing too.

When asked this question it’s alway hard for me to try to pinpoint just one reason why we homeschool, truly there are so many reasons, but I think it comes down to this: it is what God has called us to do. He knows my children’s future. When it was first put on our heart it was always after I called.

Jessica

A.

My husband and I educate our kids at home because God calls us to do so - to insure that they have their best chance at embracing Him as Lord and Savior and also to maximize the individual gifts and talents He has given each one. We take Psalm 139 very seriously.

T.

H.

I homeschool because I know that with Abeka I will be able to give my daughter the education she deserves. I know that with the lessons taught, she will be equipped with the best education. I am just starting out in this experience so the best is yet to come.

Karen

J.

My husband left a year ago, but he has never really been present, so in some ways I’ve always been a single mom. I want my kids to have a strong faith foundation & I need to be the bigger influence in their lives because of our situation. Homeschooling gives me time with them to meet those needs!

Christina

F.

God is the ultimate reason we homeschool our children. It was placed in my heart very heavy four years ago but I couldn’t understand why. Now in our fourth year I truly see that this was not about me at all! My children have excelled at so much, are now young entrepreneurs, and living to please God!

Tonya

C.

We live in a liberal state and found that the public school was teaching our son values that were not good for those who love Jesus. It is wonderful to give him a strong Christ-based worldview upon which to stand, along with an amazing academic education. We love spending our days together.

Sheryl

T.

The reason we homeschool is because we like being able to shape our children ourselves to grow in Jesus, knowing exactly what they are being taught, having more family time and time for outside activities, and also flexibility. We also love the structure of Abeka!

I decided to homeschool because I felt it was God’s calling for our family. I never imagined how much closer it would bring us as a family. We homeschool our daughter to have the freedom to take Tennis and music development seriously. She will have the opportunity to decide if her ultimate focus will be in music, sports or other academic based interests.

We homeschool because we wanted school to reflect our values. We couldn’t afford Christian school so we gave Homeschooling a try. Been doing it for thirteen years now. It has changed how we view school. There are so many ways to learn. Homeschool doesn’t have to be school in a box.

Amy

K.

Abeka homeschooling provides our children with a solid Christian education that is sprinkled with a loving & tight knit family bond. It promotes self-discipline & time management as well as the freedom of a flexible schedule. Our children are a gift and we strive to equip them with the best.

James & Lady

Q.

The bonding we get from homeschooling is something you can’t get when children are in school. I wouldn’t miss it for the world! Kids grow up too fast. Also, as I get closer to the Lord I feel closer to my child. It strengthens respect and trust between parents and children.

Alexandra

K.

As a former homeschool kid, I know what a great opportunity homeschooling is. My Mom used Abeka for me and my brothers growing up, and now I'm using it for my children. Growing up being homeschooled, to me, there is no other option. This is what God has called me to do, and thankfully it's fun!

Tina

G.

My kids are getting a private school education for a fraction of the cost. They are learning at home where there are no negative influences and distractions. We enjoy lunch together as a family. They are learning in a structured environment and loved by their elite teachers. Thankful for Abeka!

Lee Ann

G.

I strongly believe the best gift I can give my child is a good education based on the Word of God. A verbally abusive teacher led me to start Homeschooling. My son said, "I love Abeka Academy" & I knew I had made the right choice. Planning ahead is key. My son is happy again and we thank A Beka!

CYNTHIA

O.

God set a path for me to homeschool my children. We have always been at a school that taught Abeka. We had one bad experience with a teacher who broke my daughter’s sweet spirit. I decided to homeschool and I now I have my daughter back. We love everyday of homeschooling.

Brandi

As parents of 3, we really want to be their biggest influence in this world. Despite our own daily mistakes as parents and human beings, BUT because of who we are in Christ , we believe that homeschooling help us to guide our children to the Lord. So we pray we can continue until they graduate.

Sara

S.

I choose to homeschool my children, so that they will have a good foundation in which to build their lives on and there’s no confusion as to who they are and that’s what I like the best about homeschooling. They get to know who they are rather then others forcing who they’d should be on them.

Sasha

D.

I taught school for 11 years, and I loved it! It was fulfilling to see the excitement on my students' faces as they grasped new concepts. I now have the privilege to train our children and watch them grow mentally and spiritually. It is hard, but rewarding work. I love being with my kids daily!

Jennifer

P.

My daughter became very distracted from peer pressure in school. The best part about Abeka Academy is that the academic courses are christian based. I also appreciate that the teaching styles are more thorough and challenging which make retaining what she learns easier.

Charlene

M.

I teach because God chose me to be a teacher for my kids! By teaching them, I see how they learn and that brings me such a joy! I see how God opens their minds for learning and how amazingly God created their minds to learn. I thank God for every moment He lets me spend with my kids! Glory to Him!

Alla

I homeschool my children because we live in an area in the city that is not ideal for christian families. I had planned to go back to work and use my income to pay the $20,000 tuition for my 2 kids to go to a christian private school, but then baby #3 came.....praise the Lord... and we chose Abeka.

Jennifer

I homeschool my granddaughter because I enjoy it and knowing that she is getting a great Christian education is an added bonus. To watch her excel in all her courses, is a joy and really rewarding. Hope I can continue for years to come.

Mardrette

We selected Homeschool for Christian conviction, wishing the best for our son, in addition for the convenience of mobilizing to any city for my husband's work. I thank God for Abeka. God bless Abeka.

We homeschool because our daughter is able to work at the pace that works for her. She can move at a faster pace...or slow down if we want to do some time away from school. She has DVD teachers. I only need to facilitate for her. She is self-motivated and this program is perfect for her.

Sharon

TIME! After raising 5 public school children to adulthood I chose to spend more time with our youngest. Amazing, how much I realized I missed when my others were in public school all day.

Andrea

R.

My husband's job requires him to travel all over the U.S.A. and abroad. We homeschool so we can have the freedom to travel with my husband. The world is one big classroom and home is where Daddy is!

Rachel

S.

I am a new to this homeschooling journey. I feel blessed and thankful that I decided to seek out what God had put on my heart. It's rewarding to see my kids grasp what they learn and be excited about it! We look forward to our school days! Homeschooling has been a blessing for our family for sure!

Jacque

B.

One Opportunity! You get 1 chance to spend each day with your child. To fill them with the knowledge and love of God. To share the teachable moments and conversations. I wouldn't trade those for anything in the world. I got to know my son better than most people will ever know their child.

ELIZABETH

C.

I started homeschooling because my daughter has Emetophobia. Also, because the schools were overcrowded and my daughter was being taught things we don’t believe in. Christian private school cost too much. Now my daughter is learning so much more than in public school.

Tania

K.

I truly enjoy teaching our son! This experience has brought us closer than ever. I understand better what he is learning and how he learns what I teach him. I have been thrilled to watch him grow and excel. I also love the religious classes. It opens up discusses between us. I want to thank Abeka.

Janet

B.

The number one reason that we homeschool is the fact that no one could care as much about our children's education as we do. We get to teach Godly morals and lessons everyday. I get to spend time with our 3 children... Which I will NEVER regret! Bonus is that they are super smart;)

Shann

T.

One of the major reasons that we homeschool because God asked us to. Because of that calling, God has grown, shaped, and changed me in ways I truly believe he could never have if I hadn't obeyed his call. The second major reason is for the time that I get to spend with my children every day.

Rosanna

S.

Why let others do it when IT'S A JOY hear your child read his first blend, be there when he gives his heart to Christ, laugh with him when the science project goes wrong and it almost blows up, watch him deliver his testimony, Not that frustration never shows up, but it is far exceeded by the b ...

My son struggled with behavior so upon the teachers request we had him evaluated. He showed multiple signs of ADHD. As an alternative to medicine I taught him at home. If we need to bounce on the trampoline to do our math and count we do it. He needs to move while learning so we adjust accordingly!

Jenny

I chose to homeschool because of bullying in public school. Choosing Abeka was a no brainer since I was already familiar with the program from teaching preschool. My kids love the freedom and one on one teaching. Although I’ve never met any of the video teachers, I feel like they’re family.

Lisa

W.

Our main reason is: education from a Christian point of view. Also, being able to have a say on our children’s education and learning at a pace tailored to our children’s academic needs.

Silvana

S.

We had four children, we were in the military, and moved a lot. Doing Abeka kept us up to date, and on track. Each state does their curriculum differently, and they would of had to repeat some subjects, be way ahead in others. Abeka was great!

Holley

C.

We wanted to raise our children for the Lord. We also wanted to ensure a quality and individualized education for our children. Both of those things happen at home. With all of the flexibility, our children reap the benefits of focusing on what counts. And we can address problem areas individually.

Hannah

C.

We decided to homeschool our kids because we want to be their greatest influencer. We want to be their inspirer. And we also wanted to take them around the world. And with homeschool...all that became possible. We travelled the globe for 4 years and the world became our classroom also. I love it....

Mavis

M.

My husband and I decided to homeschool mainly because we want our daughters' education to be centered around a Biblical worldview. We were also concerned about the quality of educational opportunities in our area. We love the time together also and the flexibly of homeschooling is great!

Rachael

P.

Having both come from public/homeschool families, my husband and I decided to homeschool our children before we ever had them! Now on our eighth year of homeschooling with Abeka Academy, people who once thought we were “weird” or “making a mistake” now look up to us and respect our decision.

Krista

S.

Living in Australia, my son was unable to write a sentence after year 5 and had his confidence crushed by bullying. He graduated from Abeka in 2016. His scholastic achievements were so high he gained direct entry into University, before his peers! - Bachelor of Engineering - Internet of Things.

Helen

W.

We are able to teach our child in a manner that is best for him. We can add or delete things in his curriculum. We are giving him the best education we can afford. Our son gets to enjoy a happy childhood and isn't forced grown up too quickly. That is priceless!

Cyndi

S.

We homeschool because we believe that it's the best avenue to disciple our children and to make sure that we nurture them to whatever gift God gave them through education.

Amor

R.

We first started homeschooling 10 years ago due to our daughter's health issues. Now we homeschool because of the flexibility... She has time to pursue her passions, and try new things to determine her career path.

Aaron and Amy

B.

Homeschooling is a blessing. Today it’s hard trusting the public schools and what they’re teaching children. We wanted to teach our child from a biblical perspective. I thank God we’re in position to homeschool.

Calista

B.

I homeschooled three of my children with toddler twins at home as well. I homeschooled for two years , this is their first year back in school and they are at the top of the class but I will definitely homeschool again in God’s time...

Iris

O.

We began Homeschooling after being deeply convicted of God to provide our boys with a Christian education. We pulled our children out of public school to begin this journey. It has not always been easy, but God is faithful who helps us daily. Now I can say our boys are friends, not only brothers.

Lori

K.

1) Bible teaching that includes the “full counsel” of the scriptures. 2) Academically excellent curriculum. 3) I no longer need to worry about my family values being undone by a very liberal public school system. 4) Freedom to set my own schedule.

Cathy

R.

I homeschool because my precious children are a gift from the Lord, loaned to me for a few short years. It is a privilege to instruct my children & teach them the fear of the Lord! I love the solid foundation Abeka provides from the earliest level, of solid academics based on Biblical principles.

Rebecca

W.

We started homeschooling 10 yrs ago, and still doing it with our son . It gives us the possibility to know what our kids learn, and help them to have a strong Christian foundation . Abeka provides a structured daily work habit , helping in building a responsible life approach for students.

Mirela Lidia

Abeka is Christ-centered and is very easy to use! I am always amazed at my children when you dont think they are paying attention or grasping a new concept and then they blow you out of the water by getting a 100%! Homeschooling can be overwhelming but always rewarding!

Pauline

Main reason is for homeschooling religious reasons. I feel God is being drawn out of school, and I want a relationship with God for my child. Being able to do the pledge is also a big part. The freedom to go to doctors, etc which was a big deal when she was in school. It is something I would advis ...

Our primary reason of homeschooling is for religious reasons and for the close bond we have with our grandson. ABEKA and God has allowed us to have this precious gift (7 yrs)that not all children have. It allows us to instill the Word of God and to have control of what is fed in his mind daily.

Donna

B.

We have two daughters, both adopted at birth and born addicted to cocaine and FAS. They were labelled in preschool assessments as "potentially unteachable". We started them with Abeka at age 3. They are now 9 and 5 years old and thriving with Abeka, both with an "A" average. Thank God for Abeka.

Dawn

W.

I homeschooled my daughters because I wanted them to have a Christian education and I didn’t want the public school system to put labels on my girls.

Angela

H.

There are many reasons for why we homeschool. We wanted to avoid all the bad things that are being taught in the public schools, and we love the flexibility that we have with homeschooling. Also, we live in California, and as we don’t agree with mandatory vaccination, homeschool is the way to go.

Rose

D.

We homeschool because I didn’t like the idea of handing my child over to someone else to raise for 8 hours each day. I wanted to experience those firsts with her and be able to share in the joys of learning together.

Holly

D.

I was a teacher before we had children and what I saw was sad and disturbing. God put several Christian homeschooling families in our path that introduced us to Abeka. We knew we wanted a Christian education for our kids. 11 years later God is still blessing this great opportunity!

Suzanne

S.

Our main desire to choose this education is to make my kids to seek the Kingdom of God first and all they needed to stand in this world is also added along with it. With Abeka, we are happy and satisfied seeing my kids growing, learning, equipped to be good godly citizens to serve our community.

Shobha

V.

We decided years ago to homeschool our children for multiple reasons: Affordable Christian education, flexibilty in schedule, waking each morning and spending the day together learning and growing indoors and out. We've always used Abeka Academy or Abeka books. We love & cherish it! Psalm 127:3

Holli

W.

One of the many reasons we choose to homeschool our 4 boys is for health purposes. My youngest has a compromised immune system and has a breathing tube, feeding tube, and in home nursing care. Homeschooling allows for a healthier environment and the flexibility our family requires!

Heather

N.

We homeschool because my daughter has Type 1 diabetes. We can better manage her care now that she is home with us. We love the freedom that homeschooling provides. My kids have so many opportunities for field trips and traveling, because we can school anywhere!

Christina

G.

My daughter has special needs. We are in our tenth year of homeschooling. Abeka gives us the structure and flexibility for my daughter and my son to thrive. They get one on one time from me along with quality Instruction from Christian educators on the videos.

Trish

A.

My oldest in a Catholic school was bullied so badly, it forced my hand to the option of homeschooling. With my 2nd, her Pre-K teacher asked me to tell her not to answer every question since she was ahead of the other kids, again, an easy choice and now she's an A student. Best decision ever!

Denise

G.

What a gift we have been given to help our children navigate life with Jesus as their anchor. Abeka has allowed me to teach all 8 of my children even through job moves, my diagnosis & treatment with breast cancer, miscarriages and life’s curves in the road. We serve a mighty God!! Stay the course!!

Genny

S.

The main reason is so that she learns about God. The curriculum is on a higher level than most schools and she has the opportunity to advance at a faster rate. The representatives at the academy are amazing and always there to help. We are ready to start 2nd grade.

Megan

A.

My husband and I wanted a Bible based education for our kids. At the same time, God put the desire to teach in my heart. Homeschooling has been a blessing for our family in relationships, responsibility, academics, and developing our God given gifts.

Harriet

W.

We homeschooled primarily because our children’s spiritual education and standing are more important than academics . To however be blessed to be able to do Abeka which offers the best of both teaching worlds was even an added blessing. My daughters have all graduated from Abeka Academy .

Dixson

K.

Our primary reason for homeschooling is the religious aspect. We like the flexibility as well. We’re avid hunters and it allows us to take our “summer” during the fall.

Janelle

D.

The reason I started homeschooling is bullying at their school. But since we started they’ve become more respectful, get along better. I know my kids now and what they can accomplish. I see them growing in education. My oldest is now the Editor of the homeschool key club.

Barbara

S.

We homeschool because I can keep better track of where my children were in their education. Any problem areas were concentrated on and resolved. I had time to focus on their deficiencies which created a better educated child.

Robert

F.

We began homeschooling because we felt a calling after meeting homeschool family when my son was two. Over the years of homeschooling our 4 children we have found many other reasons to continue, from closer family bonds to the community relationships that are developed among other homeschool.

Natalie

C.

We want more for our children than what we were taught. We want them to love God with their minds as well as their hearts and hunger for truth, beauty, and goodness. Home education gives the opportunity for a Christian worldview to permeate their education and equip them to be light in a dark world.

Jennifer

K.

I have been homeschooling since 1995 and I am on my last year! We started because we felt the one school in our area didn't offer what we wanted for our son, but each year that we continued, the reasons became myriad! We appreciate the freedom of homeschooling and have gained so much depth.
